Language Test postponed - 5th A and B

Language Test postponed.
Dear all

I have decided to postpone the Language test from August 6th to August 10th. In the case of 5th A, we will take part of the periods devoted to Literature to do the Language Test. The Literature test, however, will still be on August 13th, as we agreed on. This postponement will give us time to get back on track after the winter break, go over things and clear up doubts, if any.

The contents for the Language test are:
1) Two articles: "Big Trouble" (page 13) and "The Dreadlock Deadlock" (page 26).
2) The vocabulary we discussed on these two articles.
3) Phrasal Verbs with COME and FALL (pages 38 and 71)
4) Inversion Construction (types 1, 2 and 3): check pages 32-33 in your booklet, plus an extra photocopy I gave you for revsion.
5) Expressing probability and possibility: check page 29 plus an extra photocopy I gave you. Please, make sure you have this copy as there are some more patterns for expressing probability which are NOT in the bookelet. In case you were not present the day we did this exercise or you have lost the copy, I am including the exercise at the bottom of this entry.
6) Vocabulary on Leisure Activities (pages 91 and 92)
7) Idioms with TIME: page 23
8) Vocabulary on Light and Darkness: page 3
I hope this email finds you well and healthy.
I will see you in August.
Regards
Daniel Ferreyra

5th year A and B - New assignments for the second week in July

Dear all

I hope this email finds you well.
I am sending you a new assignment for this second week in July.
I would like you to turn to pages 75-76 in your booklets and do the reading comprehension exercise on those pages from point A to F, including the summary in point F. In my booklet, these pages are rather blurry. Should this happen to you in your own booklets, please turn to pages 86-87 and do the same activity covering points A to F.
You should also complete the exercise on idioms with TIME on page 23 in your booklet.
All this is to be submitted on Friday, July 17th to my gmail address: danieruferreyra@gmail.com
As regards Literature, I will contact you tomorrow, Tuesday, to let you know about what to do. Anyway, carry on with your reading.
Remember that we agreed on a Language test on August 6th. I will tell you about the contents by means of this blog soon.
Regards

Daniel Ferreyra

4th year A and B - New assignment for the second week in July

Dear all

I have been receiving some of your work on "A Family Supper". Thank you very much.
In this second week, I am going to ask you to go back to this short story and do something creative on the story. You may choose ONE of the three options below and write at least 200 words on it.

Option A: retell the story narrated in "A Family Supper" but from the point of view of ONE of the following characters: the Father, the Mother, Kikuko, Watanabe-san. You should tell the story in the first person as if you were that character. You may refer to the events in the story and add some other information.

Option B: the story has a very open ending: we do not know what actually happened in this very peculiar supper. Imagine an alternative ending to the story. Feel free to write anything you want, as long as it shows a certain logical connection with the main body of the story.

Option C: imagine that the worst-case scenario has happened: the whole family has been poisoned. Write an article in a newspaper reporting the events. You could include the statements of witnesses, relatives of the narrator and of Watanabe-san, the final conclusions of
the coroner about the autopsy of the family, a reflection about the issue of suicide, etc.

This assignment should be submitted by Friday, July 17th. Remember to write at least 200 words.
Regards

5th year A and B: New Assignments for JULY 2009

Dear all

I am very apologetic for my delay in contacting you. Here are your assignments for this first week in July.

ONLY 5th A STUDENTS: you must do the IB READING COMPREHENSION PAPER that I gave you on Thursday when we last met. Please, send me the answers stating which TEXT (A-B-C or D) you are dealing with, and the number of the question. Notice that in the case of Text D you must write an answer to the text.
As I told you before, do this CONSCIENTIOUSLY since it will be for your own benefit when it comes to sitting for your IB MOCK EXAMS. This assignment must be submitted on Friday, July 10th. Those who were absent should contact me and I will try to scan the text and send it to you by email.

ONLY 5th B STUDENTS: you must finish off the IB READING COMPREHENSION PAPER which we began in class last Thursday. Do this CONSCIENTIOUSLY since it will be for your own benefit when it comes to sitting for your IB MOCK EXAMS. This assignment must be submitted on Friday, July 10th. Those who were absent should contact me and I will try to scan the text and send it to you by email.

BOTH 5th A and B STUDENTS: As regards LITERARY TEXT OPTIONS, I would like you to carry on reading City of Glass and move on into chapters 7, 8 and 9. As we did before, I want you to select TWO quotes from each chapter and analyse them following the aspects presented below:

1) Duplications and mirror images.
2) Identity: being Paul Auster, Daniel Quinn and Max Work.
3) Walking as MINDLESSNESS and as entering other consciousnesses.
4) The burden of CONSCIOUSNESS (i.e. the burden of being oneself. In this case, the burden of being Daniel Quinn).
5) The Tower of Babel: following Stillman around New York. Is the Peter Stillman that Quinn/Auster is following the right one? And if he is not, why does Quinn/Auster keep following him? How does Quinn benefit from having this case?
6) The three interviews with Peter Stillman.
7) Stillman’s language project and the reason why he came to New York.

This assignment must be submitted on Monday, July 13th. Once we meet again, we will go back to these chapters to clear up doubts and share ideas.
I will be contacting you soon with some further tasks for the next few days.

Stay healthy and strong on the inside.
Regards

Errata - Rescheduling the deadline for your assignments

Dear all

I have just realized I made a mistake. The deadline for your assignment is FRIDAY, JULY 10th, NOT AUGUST 10th.
I am sorry for the mistake.

4th A-B: New Assignment for JULY 2009

Dear all

I am sending you a new assignment based on your reading of Kazuo Ishiguro's "A Family Supper". This assignment must be submitted by Friday, August 10th.

I would like you to go back to the short story and concentrate on the following aspects:

1) The conflict across generations:
1.1) Father and son (remember that the father fought in WWII, whereas the son went to live in California, USA, the country that defeated Japan in 1945).
1.2) Father and Kikuko: traditionally, Japanese women were expected to be submissive, silent, obedient and loyal. They were not supposed to study or work outside the house. Their marriages were arranged by their fathers and they were completely controlled by the male figures of their families: father, brother, husband. How conventional is Kikuko as a young Japanese woman? How aware is the father of this fact?
1.3) The question of suicide: how do the different characters see suicide, especially Watanabe-san's suicide? Watanabe-san killed his own family as well: is this relevant in the story you are reading?
1.4) The mother: the narrator's father suggests that the mother also committed suicide. Why is that?
1.5) The model battleships: the father is very fond of making miniatures of battleships. What do you think that shows about the father and the importance that the war has for him? How does this fact contribute to the conflict across generations?

2) Light and darkness: how do light and darkness operate in the novel, especially at the very end? How can this be understood metaphorically?

3) The ending: what do you think happens at the end of the story? Support your claim with a relevant quotation and your own comments.

4) The title of the story: how do you interpret the title? Is it ironic in any way?

5) Regardless of nationalities, what do you think is the main theme of the story? Provide a relevant QUOTATION that supports your claim.

6) You do not need to answer this question, but I would like you to think about the old woman by the well, and why she looks so similar to the mother. This is a rather enigmatic and confusing bit of the story, to which we will go back once we meet again.

Remember to submit your work by August 10th to my gmail account: danieruferreyra@gmail.com

Stay healthy and strong

New assignments 5th year A and B

Dear all

I am contacting you all to give you two new assignements to be submitted on either Thursday 11th or Friday 12th at the latest.

ONLY for 5th B students: I would like you to go to page 33 in your booklets and do the exercises on two new types of Inversion Construction (Types 2 and 3). Read the theory and then do the exercises. Remember that in the case of this particular grammar structure the word order is ALTERED: you must use an AUXILIARY + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB following certain specific words and phrases that are stated in the photocopy.

ONLY for 5th A students: I would like you to turn to page 3 in your booklets and do the exercises with LIGHT and DARKNESS. Then, I would like you to choose 10 (TEN) of the expressions and write sentences of your own illustrating their meaning.

Remember to send your work to my gmail address: danieruferreyra@gmail.com

All the best

Daniel Ferreyra
